Seven weeks after the D-Day landing, the First United States Army launched an offensive attack against the Axis powers, codenamed Operation Cobra. Guided by General George S. Patton, the Allied troops succeeded in encircling the German troops into surrender, but not without fierce fighting and incredible casualties.
